Technology Expands....

your pocketbook:)

I am in the process of making this poster for my classroom. It is taking me a while doing freehand, and coloring in the letters, but it is worth it.
Check out the details and see if you can figure out who is in the letters "L" and "G".

Here is how technology expanded my pantry today:)
I got all this free using coupons, store deals, and INFO that I found on my favorite blogs (see side blog-list). Yippee!

The cards are from a deal they are running at Safeway. Buy 3 get $3 off (these are the .99 kind)
The Vive shampoo and conditioners in the back were BOGOfree at King soopers. I had a BOGOfree coupon so both ended up being free. This is kind of hard to wrap your mind around...and it sounds totally illegal...but...the computer automatically takes off the second one, and when the cashier rings up my coupon it takes off the ammount for the first one too. Technically-nothing sneaky about it. Although, some stores won't let you do it. (I haven't had good luck with it at Rite Aid) (I used 2 different coupons to get 4 free)
The Cheerios and Dove shampoo is what I am considering FREE using my $5 off any $20 purchase at Walgreen's. ($5=total cost of 2boxes Cheerios and Dove shampoo and conditioner)
All the Clean and Clear. Whoa baby. Anybody need some face wash? In order to use my $5 off $20 I did this deal, used LOTS of coupons (9 to be exact) and got $10 back in Register Rewards so all the clean and clear was free too. (The other $5 was spent on 5 more boxes of Cheerios...John goes through those like water, and $1 (after using a coupon) is a good price for a 14oz. box) I actually made $2 on the Preparation H.
Raisinetts and Nerds were what I got with my $5 off $20 in Nestle/Stoffers/lots of other random brands at King Soopers. I used the coffemate to help get to $20, and then handed them my FREE coffemate creamer coupon I signed up for a long time ago, so that was free too.
Lastly, the Wheat Thins, and Kraft dressing were free after purchasing the Koolaid packets using Kraft tear-off coupons (they are also in Aug. All You magazine). I had overage from other places so I included the Koolaid in the picture:)
I'm thinking of starting anotherblog to detail more of what I buy and how you can get the same deal. If you think you would look at a blog of my frugalness, let me know.

The Price is Right

I went to a few garage sales this morning and found some GREAT stuff. Then I went to Staples and Office Depot, where it was teacher appreciation day, and I got breakfast and lots of free stuff (including a 512 flash drive-which I forgot to put in the picture). I also went to Ace Hardware and Goodwill (50% off sale) before heading home.
If you want...you can think of this post like the game "The Price is Right". Come up with a price of how much you think it is worth...then adjust it down to my frugalness, and see if you are right:)

First Group: "Teaching Stuff"

Grand Total: .95

Second group: "Scrap booking Supplies"
This includes a brand new album, refill cover pages, A punch, stamps, lots of ink pads and a Rubbermaid to put it in:)

Price: 5.00

Third Group: Things related to clothes/exercise.
19 clothing items, exercise video, jump rope, aundry hamper, and some hangers. These are NICE clothes too: The Limited, Banana Republic, GAP, Old Navy....

Two Eddie Bauer camping chairs with foot rests, 4 tiki torches, a waterproof jacket, and backpack.

Please ignore that I have my eyes closed in that last picture.
Here...I am modeling the blue sweater and tan pants...and I am smiling (even though it still isn't a good picture.)

fun stuff

I got some fun stuff for cheap or free this week.
This is my favorite: School snacks!

After store deals, coupons and a $10 rebate, I only paid .80 for all of this! I would go into detail about how, but it was kind of time consuming to match things up and make sure I got everything correctly.
At RiteAid this week I got all this for about 1.10. (They have some pretty amazing rebates going on there this week).

How do I get such great deals?

Well, the best answer is...I have TIME. (for another 2 weeks at least:)
I didn't get that much free stuff this week, but I will show you how I got the deals I did.
First Stop... Staples.

The pencil holders were on sale for 1 cent each. I got 2 (but since I am a teacher, I could have gotten 25). Bic pens were on sale for 99 cents. I also had a coupon for 1.00 off 2 Bic items. You can find that here. You may have to click through to the "next page" at the bottom to find the right one.
I was planning on getting some nicer pens and an electric pencil sharpener (both free after rebate), but I came to late in the week and they were gone. I wasn't really that surprised, because I know to get those deals you need to hit the stores Monday.
Total purchase: 1.01 (plus tax)

Next stop...Target

Olay body wash (2 bottles and a bonus puff) on clearance for $3.15. I had a coupon for $2.oo off, so my final cost was 1.15 for 2 (57 cents each)
Suave body wash (large bottle) on clearance for 1.27. I used a 75cents off, and a BOGOfree. (I wasn't sure if they would allow both coupons, so I tried it and it worked with no problem.) Final cost for 2, 52cents. (26 cents each)
Colgate Maxfresh toothpaste (3 tubes (6.oz)) on clearance for 3.50. I had a 50cent coupon, so each tube was a dollar. This is a pretty good price for the big tubes, and I was willing to pay a bit more, because this is the toothpaste that John loves, and the only kind he will use. Final cost for 3, 3.00 (1.00 each).
Quaker Granola bars (regular size) on sale for $2.00. I used a target coupon for .50, and a Manufactures coupon for 1.00 (from the paper). You can use both a target coupon and a Manu. coupon for each item at target. I print most of my target coupons from here. Final cost .50.
Colgate Total Advance toothpaste (1 6oz. tube and 2 trial size tubes) On clearance for 1.58. I used a 1.00 target coupon (that I had from the package of a previous purchase) and a 1.00 manu. coupon. Total cost 0.00. Overage: .42
Total cost at Target before my splurge: 4.75

My Splurge at Target was something for my classroom at school.
A large canvas painting of the solar system . (It wouldn't even fit in my cart!)

Originally $39.99, on clearance for 5.04. I have been continually looking for classroom decorations, and this is about the same price as a poster. Isn't it cool!
I'm going to a few other stores today, UPDATE:
Walgreens Deals:

At Walgreens today, I was pretty excited about rebates, and the $5 off a purchase of $20 coupon I found at the Walgreens website for today only.

Ultra tuff trash bags. 4.99 each (Sale for BOGO) and easysaver rebate for $5 off 2. Final price 0.00

Biofusion, Jane mineral makeup, light bulbs, and vaccum seal bag will all be free after rebate. Nevia lip stuff 2.99 (used .50 walgreens coupon and .50 Manu coupon) and I will get it free after rebate. Total cost 0.00, overage 1.00.

Walgreens purchases (after rebate) 0.00 Overage 6.00 (5.00 off coupon, and 1.00 from lip stuff)
of course I did spend some money on my FAVORITE candy bar (PB twix), and I often do SPEND money there (instead of making it:)

Rite Aid

Irish Spring Soap on sale for .99, had a .35 coupon.

Lady speed stick on sale for .99, coupon for 1.00

Biore cleansing face wash on clearance for 3.49 (coupon for 2..00 off that I got from a tear-off pad by the makeup section) final cost 1.49.

Garnier Fructice melting mask (for hair) 2.99 with a 2.99 rebate. I used a 1.00 manu. coupon and a 1.00 riteaid coupon. Overage 2.00

Garnier Fructise conditioner 2.99 with a 2.99 rebate. I used a 1.00 manu. coupon. Overage 1.00

Hershys bliss chocolate on clearance for 75% off. I had a 1.00 coupon that I printed from HERE. Price after coupon 0.10.

Rite aid final purchases: Overage .77

4th of July and other random thoughts

Lori has a great post about their 4th of July outing.
I will illustrate our 4th of July in details using as few words as possible:)
Because it was...

We decided to play original

My favorite games were:

and excite bike.

We also grilled

It was an incredibly relaxing, super fun 4th!

OTHER RANDOM THOUGHTS:
1. We are avoiding grasshoppers like the plague. (pun intended)
Apparently we have a grasshopper infestation. I only mainly notice when I go out to water our flowers and 10 grasshoppers jump out as I water the plant. When I was coming in the house the other day I spotted this beautiful one. Check out the details.

2. I'm not a great speller, but I think people who manufacture scrapbooking products should be able to spell. See for yourself:

3. Now that I'm into coupons, I often look at the details and exclusions. When I got this one from Qudoba I noticed it said "Limit one birthday per year". Who comes up with this stuff?

4. I admit it. I am a "neurotic obsessive compulsive frugal shopper." (quote taken from Centsible Sawyer) I am addicted to free stuff. I was unaware of how bad it was getting until this Sunday when the paper delivery guy put in 3 Target adds and NO COUPONS! It ruined most of my day. Seriously. As I organized my shopping list, a good number of things that i could have gotten free with coupons were out of the question because I didn't have the coupons. I'll stop the story there so you don't think I'm that crazy:)
Oh, but here's my free stuff from last week:

My free stuff this week

This week I made a haul with free stuff (using rebates, coupons, and contests).
I even won a free movie ticket (and like 7 bags of chips) with the Subway Get Smart contest. I waited until today to take a picture, and then sure enough, I got another freebie in the mail.

I will probably be giving a lot of this stuff away.
I had never tried RiteAid (drugstores) before this week, but the rebates are super-easy and you do it all online.
Along that note, if any of you parents are looking for "Kids Eat Free (or almost-free)" deal at resturants...check out this master list from MoneySavingMom (thanks!)
Also...can I say "I LOVE SUMMER!"

How YOU can get some good deals and free stuff

Here is my first of a few posts about how you can get some of the free stuff that I get:)
Deal tips:
1. Sign up with a separate e-mail account than your regular one.
a. If you are serious about getting deals I would make sure you sign up for most things with an e-mail account that you don’t use that much in case it happens to get spamed.
2. Install the coupon printer. Many coupon sites that I use ask you to install the coupon printer. I was very wary at first…but it is totally worth it! ( will talk more about printing coupons in another post)

My favorite deals:
1. $40 Digital TV converter box coupons here (https://www.dtv2009.gov/Options.aspx)
2. Office Depot free DVD 10pk here (http://ebm.cheetahmail.com/r/regf2?aid=1237020949&n=4)
3. Free Food links. Sign up at your favorite resturants for free food. Some send you and e-mail for a free birthday treat, some send you a deal for signing up, some send both! If you plan on signing up for a BUNCH of your favorite resturants, you may want to “change” when your birthday is for some of them. For example, my birthday is this week, and I have like 15 choices of where to go to eat, because I have deals for those places that expire 2 wks from when sent.
When you click on the link…be sure to look at the other posts (with resturants not just S-Z)
http://thecentsiblesawyer.blogspot.com/2008/06/free-food-links-last-ones.html
Look at all the options I had during the 2-weeks around my birthday:

4. Sign up for Kohl’s e-mail updates and get $5 off any $5 or more purchace. http://www.kohls.com/upgrade/registration/sale_alert_signup.jsp
5. ***It appears that this contest has ended***Dr. Pepper’s more to explore. (first you regiser) then login, choose “need a code?” at the bottom of the page, and put in your e-mail. Go to your e-mail, copy the code, and paste it into the contest box. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t, but each time you get a coupon for $1.00 off two 12-pack or 2-liter of Dr. Pepper. You can only request a code once each 24-hours, but you could request codes to different e-mail addresses to have more than one chance a day. I won a $5 grocery store gift card the other day, but mostly I do it for the coupons (John drinks a lot of Dr. Pepper). http://www.drpeppermoretoexplore.com/
6. Blue Bunny $1 off any novelty coupon:http://www.bluebunny.com/coupons.aspx (who doesn’t love ice cream?:)

My favorite free samples: (you may have to look on the website where it says “try it free” or “request a free sample”)
1. True lemon sample: http://www.truelemon.com/sample.cfm
2. Free bottle of Coffee Mate http://www.coffee-mate.com/SpecialOffers.aspx
3. Drink mix samples: http://walmart.triaddigital.com/enhancedrendercontent_ektid41062.aspx
4. Kashi Granola: http://www.kashi.com/outreach/off_your_rump/free_sample
5. Yoplait kids free package: http://www.yoplait.com/products_yoplaitkids.aspx (look for the pop-up)(it didn't come up for me when I double checked the link, but I will leave it here-just in case)
6. Teddy Grahams sample: http://www.scholastic.com/teddytrail/
7. Nature Made(vitamins)-sign up for a 14 day free supply: http://naturemade.com/
8. Clorox2colors: http://www.homecleaningsquad.com/clorox_offer.html
9. Free Attune bar: http://stores.attunefoods.com/free_attune_daily.php
10. Free Playtex baby bottle (drop-ins): http://www.playtexbaby.com/bpafree/info.html
11. This blog lists some more that I didn’t list: http://freebies4mom.blogspot.com/2008/05/edible-freebies-roundup.html

Saving money and having a "plan"

THIS IS A "DEAL" POST. If you only read my blog to find out what is going on in our lives...it will probably be boring:)
Today I decided to save money by making a list, going to lots of different stores, and using coupons and gift cards.

I fueled up (my energy) by getting some frappichinoish drink from Borders on the way into town. I have a borders gift card and...I don't read, so spend it on fu-fu coffee drinks. I have done the same with a Barnes and Noble gift card I got once:)
Office Depot was in the same shopping center so I got my free 10pk DVD+R for signing up for a weekly e-mail. This is a great deal!(worth 9.99)
You can do the same here.

I went to Walgreens yesterday because the May and June deals overlap on the 30th of the month so you can use both coupon books for great deals. I also had a $10 off any $30 purchase only good on Friday, so I got some great deals...but I also got some deals that I thought were going to be great, but were only OK. To make up for it I was more organized today.

I went to Target, Safeway, and K-mart for most of this.
I nixed a trip to King Soopers because of the awesome deals at K-mart...plus with a 20 min drive home, I can only go to 2 stores for cold stuff.
I got all this for under $20.00.

The 5 boxes of Cheerios are 14oz. boxes! The strawberry containers were a $1 each, I forgot to include the eggs I got for $1, and a gallon of milk for 2.49. The lifewater was $1 each and I had a BOGO free. Most of the rest (except the Ziploc) I got for a dollar (using coupons and deals).

I also got some FREE stuff:

Free Coke from register rewards (those coupon things that you get along with your reciept at some grocery stores) Actually I think this one was sticking out of the coupon printer, and I was walking by one and no one was around so I took it:) The BBQ sauce, Dressing and Brita filter all have a mail-in rebate...so eventually they will be free. The All, Tylenol, Baby wash and Excedrin were trial size things, and I had a $1 coupon for each...so they were free.
Chex mix was on sale for 99cents at Walgreens and I had a dollar coupon.
Liveactive ceral was on sale at target for 2.99 and I had a 3.00 coupon. I watched some commercials online for about 20 min a month ago, and I got a free subscription to Good Houskeeping.

To add to my deals, our house was hit with hail during the tornado, so I asked John to make me a list of things he needed from town. First on the list was 2 new hoses. This is what the hail did to our hose. (no joking, it worked fine the day before the tornado.)

I went to Lowe's for all of his stuff. I didn't get amazing deals, but at least I saved money doing it.

I did 2 separate transactions and used a $10 off any $50 purchase, and used a 10% off coupon for the other stuff.

I plan to post some of my favorite freebees that don't have strict guidelines and don't have to be done on a certian date. In case you are more hard-core into this, I have included some of my favorite money saving sites on the "other blogs I look at" on the right hand side of my blog. They are money saving mom, freebies4mom, and centsible sawyer.

personal thoughts

Most of the time, this blog is kind of like a show and tell. Today I'm going to make it more personal. I think my change of heart for this one post is because I know the people who read my blog (for the most part) and I think they might find it interesting.

DEALS
I have been true to my Dutch heritage, and I have really tried hard to get GREAT deals these last couple of weeks. I think it has worked, and I have gotten a lot of things for very cheap or free. (plus I will be getting a lot of free samples in 4-8 weeks:) For all the work I put in clipping coupons and making sure I go to certain stores and double checking prices at the register...I have come to 2 conclusions. I love getting deals, AND it is a LOT of work. You may see I have added the "money saving mom" blog to my list of "other blogs I look at" on the side. At least it is a time in my life when I do have time for it.

Here is the free stuff I got this week. Actually the body wash ended up costing me 29cents. I didn't get the basket free, but I really liked it and it was on sale.

I also went to a large church garage sale where you could fill a box for a dollar this morning. I didn't exactly "fill" the box, but I got the stuff I wanted.

Another thing I was just looking into is how to get the government coupons for $40 for a TV converter box. All you (who like us) are on the "rabbit ears" plan need one sometime in the future. Next February the nation goes digital and......well you all know the rest. Here is a website I found helpful: https://www.dtv2009.gov/

HEADACHES
In other personal notes... I always get a really bad headache (like really bad so I can't sleep) that lasts for a day, about once a month. I couldn't really tell if it is a migraine-(cause I don't know what they are)- but it hurts in my neck, sinuses, head and sometimes my stomach gets upset.
I was telling a co-worker about it the other day, and I said that IBuprofen doesn't help (though I usually take it anyway), but popping M&M's usually made me feel better:) (I attributed that to the released endorphins when you eat that make you feel Happy.) I told her "It's hard to be crabby or upset with kids if your eating M&M's:)"

I had a revelation about the underlying cause when I read an article in the Sunday paper insert. The article summarized: Lots more women then men get migraines. Many get them around a certain time every month. Quoting writer Dr.Mitchell-"Shifts in estrogen levels seem to be the key when it comes to migraines. Part of a woman's cycle involves a slowly but consistently rising level of estrogen, followed by a rather rapid decline as progesterone shifts into high gear. It's during this "estrogen withdrawal" that women are most susceptible to a menstrual migraine." Treatments in the article included a combination of caffeine and acetaminophen (Tylenol), aspirin and Tylenol or prescription medications. WOW! The M&M's (caffeine) really do help:)

SHEETS
We have a king size bed, and the fitted sheet keeps coming up on the sides and slipping off. I have 2 different sheet sets and both of them seem to fit well when i put them on, and then after crawling into bed and sleeping 1 or 2 nights they start coming up on the side and we have to tuck them back on the corners. I don't remember having this problem with any other size bed, but maybe I just need new sheets. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a magic solution?

That is the end of my ranting and raving for today:)
